Our IW Solutions Framework classifies SharePoint projects into three categories:
Business Productivity Infrastructure – infrastructure and basic content
Information Worker Applications – projects leveraging the individual capabilities of the platform such as content management, search, forms, etc.
Business Solutions – business solutions leveraging the full range of capabilities of the MOSS platform
Each of these three areas requires a different implementation methodology. Successful SharePoint deployments include projects in all three areas. Many failed installations only address the Business Productivity Infrastructure and Information Worker Applications. IW Solution architecture can be implemented, but business solutions must be developed and deployed in a way which supports the business process and enables end-users to be more productive. This is the difference between providing a platform with capabilities and providing a set of business solutions. The business solution approach is ultimately required to drive adoption and achieve business impact.
